Livia C Hool

Professor Livia Hool is the inaugural Wesfarmers, UWA-VCCRI Chair in Cardiovascular Research and Director of The Ben Beale Laboratory in Cardiovascular Research at The University of Western Australia. Following completion of a PhD in Sydney, Livia undertook postdoctoral studies in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA as an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellow. Subsequently, with an NHMRC Peter Doherty Fellowship she returned to Australia and relocated to The University of Western Australia, where she established The Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Laboratory. She is a career research fellow, and her research focuses on the role of the L-type calcium channel in the excitability of the heart and in the regulation of energetics, with an emphasis on designing therapy to prevent the development of cardiomyopathy and heart failure. She was recently elected to the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. Livia is currently President of the Australian Physiological Society, Treasurer of International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) World Council (2022-25; re-elected 2025-28) and past President ISHR Australasian section (2013-16; re-elected 2016-19).
