Sergei Grando
Sergei A. Grando, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sci., is Professor at Departments of Dermatology and Biochemistry of University of California Irvine. He graduated from Kiev Medical Institute, Ukraine, in 1980, obtained Ph.D. in 1984 and Doctor of Science in Medicine (D.Sci.) degree in 1989. Dr. Grando is one of pioneers of studies of and co-author of concept of non-neuronal cholinergic network wherein acetylcholine acts as a local hormone, or a cytotransmitter. His group first demonstrated nicotinic receptors in mucocutaneous and lung epithelia, mutagenic action of nicotine, and cloned human α9 nicotinic receptor and annexin A9 that binds acetylcholine. He published more than 230 articles or monographs.
